We kicked off our Friday NXNEing with a parking lot BBQ from the folks at Jager and Exclaim! One of the best parts about NXNE is the BBQs. It gives you a chance to enjoy a bit of sunshine before going into the darkness of all the lovely windowless venues Toronto has to offer.
I didn't catch as much Friday as I would have liked because I took an NXNE break to run over to Sound Academy and check out my punk faves Face to Face, but there was still some early and late NXNE goodness.
Goose Hut at The Silver Dollar – 9 p.m.
Montreal's Goose Hut got the dance party started at Pop Montreal's NXNE showcase. The trio had an unpredictable live set up – beating on drums on the floor, one guitar, and chorus vocals layered over synth and tracks. Their hooky songs got both the crowd and the band shimmying along, and Goose Hut were just kind of endearing. Super fun dance rock and a great way to start the Friday night. Check out some Goose Hut tracks here.
Bleached at The Silver Dollar – 1 a.m.
Bleached made me feel like I was in SoCal soaking up some rays. Too bad I was just actually in the dark and dingy Silver Dollar, but Bleached's set was a bright spot of the night. The two-woman band kind of reminds me of a beachier girl version of the Ramones – surf punk with shouty harmonies. Really fun vibe for fans of Vivian Girls and The Ramones. Bleached has another set Saturday at the Silver Dollar, 1 a.m. Surf's up.
Since I missed out on a chunk of Friday shows, here's some of my top picks for Saturday. I'm feeling a rocking kind of night...
